AI “resurrects” long-dead dictator in a new era of deepfake election manipulation

Ahead of imminent elections, a formerly dreaded army general who governed Indonesia with an iron grip for over three decades has a message for voters from the afterlife.

In a three-minute video with over 4.7 million views on X, the former general declares, “I am Suharto, the second president of Indonesia.”

Although somewhat convincing at first, it’s evident that the stern man in the video is not the former Indonesian president. The real Suharto, known as the “Smiling General” for his relentless leadership, passed away in 2008 at age 86.

This AI-generated deepfake video was designed to emphasize the importance of votes in the upcoming election, as stated by Erwin Aksa, deputy chairman of Golkar – one of Indonesia’s largest and oldest political parties.
