The true stakes of Helldivers 2 revealed through Automaton missions

Helldivers 2 drew comparisons to Starship Troopers upon its initial release, but has since evolved to resemble the post-Judgment Day future in Terminator. Following a successful first mission to recapture territory from Terminids, the game took a turn for the worse with the introduction of Automatons, more formidable foes attacking Super Earth planets.

Recently, the planet Malevelon Creek fell to the Automatons, while Mort was barely liberated after approximately 10 million Helldiver casualties, as reported on the official Helldivers 2 Discord (via Gamesradar). Despite some progress, the Automatons have pushed back the forces of Super Earth. A message will soon inform players that the major objective to liberate Automaton-controlled planets has failed, prompting a change in strategy.

In the midst of patriotic citizens mourning their homes burning to the ground due to Automaton invaders, the Terminid Control System stands ready for activation in response to the invasion of Super Earth territory. Justice will be sought by the citizens of Super Earth.

While players can still engage in battles on Automaton-held worlds, most will likely shift their focus to Terminid territory, starting with Veld, home to an undetected hive harboring un-Democratic vermin.

Helldivers 2 began with the Terminids, posing a challenge that players overcame to accomplish the initial mission and reap the rewards. However, the introduction of Automatons presented a much greater challenge, with their armored units and missions demanding increased strategy and teamwork. Despite efforts from Arrowhead Game Studios devs, failure became inevitable.
